Choosing choice
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, April 6, 2007
The Journal’s March 19 editorial “Choosing school choice” was right on target. It is time to let parents choose the school that best meets their child’s education needs. One can only hope that many states begin to follow Utah’s lead in opening up school choice for all children. In fact, here in Rhode Island parents looking for education options for their children already have one opportunity for school choice.
Last year the legislature created the Corporate Scholarship Tax Credit Program, which extends school choice to our state’s neediest kids. Under the program, eligible corporations may receive tax credits for donations to scholarship organizations. These charitable organizations then use the contributions to fund scholarships for low-income K-12 students to use at the participating private school of their choice. The scholarships help open the door to new educational opportunities for Rhode Island’s most disadvantaged kids. We’re proud that our state has embraced this program and, along with The Journal, we look forward to the day when all parents and students have a choice.
