Bruce Lang: Four-word fix for R.I.: Cut taxes and spending

01:00 AM EST on Saturday, February 16, 2008

Rhode Island Rep. Steven Costantino, chairman of the House Finance Committee, seems to be a man who means well. But in his Feb. 10 Commentary piece “New economic vision for Rhode Island,” he completely misses all important points about economic development.

Practically everything that he recommends for economic development is either being done in some fashion or takes so long to generate results that it’s too late for now. Representative Costantino and all the other ill-informed and naïve elected members of the General Assembly should visit the Economic Development Corporation and find out what’s going on.

Aside from that, the best way to improve economic development in Rhode Island can be summed up in two words: Cut taxes!

Mr. Costantino does make two vital observations: “State revenue is growing at 1 percent, while expenditures are growing at 6 percent,” and he says that we have “a fiscal crisis on our hands.” Both statements are true and both have only one solution, three words: Reduce government spending!

It’s truly unbelievable that most of our elected legislators (from the most powerful branch of our state government) either “don’t get it” and/or are so influenced by the powerful public-employee unions that they “don’t want to get it.”

Where is their urgency and anger? Well, it sure makes me angry, because they’re wrecking our wonderful state!
