Bruce Lang: Promote Newport!
01:00 AM EST on Thursday, December 4, 2008
Newport recently was recognized by National Geographic Travelers as one of the “best historic places in the world to visit.” We were ranked 78 out of 109 cities worldwide! In the analysis there were a few negative comments such as “too much shopping” and “downtown hodgepodge” and “totally congested.” Some of Newport’s citizens are dwelling on these negative comments and are upset by them.
I say that we should be thrilled just to be on the National Geographic Traveler’s list! To a certain extent such reviews are quite subjective. And Newport may have been evaluated by just two people or more likely one person. So let’s not lament any “negative observations.” Those one or two representatives of the magazine may have specific complaints, but many visitors may not object or may even find such small-town characteristics desirable.
Most importantly, in Newport and Rhode Island, let’s focus on the big picture and promote this marvelous achievement award. We should be listing all the awards and assets that we have and be using them as much as possible in our marketing and advertising to attract as many tourists, visitors, home buyers and new businesses as possible. We should be shouting and bragging all over the region and even the country about our many varied accomplishments and awards. Obviously, we have certain needs and problems, as does every city or state. But if we focus on the positives and keep working at getting better, we will prevail.
