After giving R.I. a chance, I quit

01:00 AM EDT on Monday, August 20, 2007

I moved here from Boston to rent about six months ago, and I loved it. Hey, I have even watched the real estate market, and for a while had my eye on one particular condo.

Now, I have been hearing about the recent rash of muggings downtown. It is only through word of mouth that I know about them. I haven’t seen anything in The Journal. I have scanned the online version daily and have yet to read anything. I hope I just missed it.

In spite of a predictable pattern, the Providence police have not made any arrests.

Here is what this newcomer has seen and experienced in Providence:

• Insufficient police response to these muggings.

• An apparent lack of proper news coverage about this danger.

• Illogical overnight-parking bans that are downright anti-resident.

• Maddeningly, wildly inconsistent parking signage downtown, obviously a clever system of obtaining revenue for the city rather than upholding parking regulations.

• Drunk students that party all night, with obligatory police response that is effective for about five minutes.

• An antiquated motor-vehicle registry that reminds me of Massachusetts — about 30 years ago!

• A bloated state Department of Revenue bureaucracy that refuses to even answer the phone.

Providence and Rhode Island, I gave you over six months. You screwed up. Bye. I’m moving out. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live here.
