Ned Hastings: Dancing and feasting

01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, August 21, 2008

Thanks to The Journal and Prof. William Wyatt for his July 17 column, “Owl/Pussycat unions legal in Bong-Tree state.” It carried the story from the “beautiful pea green boat” to the marriage preformed by the “Turkey who lives on the hill.” But he did not go on to the wedding feast and wedding dance. The feast: “They dined on mince, and slices of quince,/Which they ate with a runcible spoon.” The dance: “And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,/They danced by the light of the moon.”

Edward Lear also wrote the great poem about the cow “jumping over the moon and the dish running away with the spoon.” “Runcible spoons” were made in Providence by Gorham silver.
