Lynne H. Einig: Wright behind the times
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, May 8, 2008
Is the Rev. Jeremiah Wright ready for an African-American president? I am. I am a white woman, almost as old as he, and I support Barack Obama.
Millions of white Americans and, yes, white American men (I’m married to one of them) are ready to have an African-American or a woman as president. This may not be a perfect country, but it is ready to move on.
Is Wright? I don’t think so. I’m not black, but in my youth I was told I could only be a secretary, nurse or teacher. That’s not true any more. Some still won’t accept the new reality, but why support them and give them ammunition?
That’s what Wright is doing. He should get over it and move on. He should accept the improvements people have fought for, died for, and won.
This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad!
