John S. Egan Sr.: A fabulous July 5
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, August 21, 2008
Some things in life are still free.
On July 5, I had the pleasure of attending the concert and fireworks at the Newport Naval War College. All the families that attended this gala affair were treated to an exciting evening of fun.
It was the perfect setting, overlooking the Bay with the Newport Bridge in the background and the quarter-moon high in the sky. The fireworks synchronized with music, and were so impressive I just had to write this letter to thank everyone involved in making the holiday so special.
Families sat blanket to blanket. Children danced and played. Old folks sang their hearts out. It was a sight to behold.
One of the most impressive moments was when the Navy Band played a medley of the armed services’ anthems and requested members of each branch of the service to stand as their anthem was played. Men and woman stood proudly.
All of the vendors offered Rhode Island favorites with very affordable prices for all the moms and dads.
Parking was also free.
What more could one ask?
The Navy deserves the highest praise for a night of bliss.
JOHN S. EGAN Sr.
