Allison Casey: How to make Journal better

01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, June 28, 2009

My name is Allison Casey and I recently finished the sixth grade at Wickford Middle School, in North Kingstown. My family receives The Journal every day via home delivery, and we all enjoy it. My dad reads the sports section. I always look at the comics (I even have a collection of some of my favorites). My mom always reads the letters to the editor. However, there is always room for improvement.

Many people buy this newspaper every day and enjoy it. Most of these people realize that there are a few typos for such a popular paper. People I know complain about these errors, including myself, because it gets very confusing at times.

All of the extra words added to sentences and letters added to words that don’t belong there is a waste of ink. Using extra ink means that it runs out faster and that means you need to buy more. Where do you get the money for the ink? You get it from profits, and you don’t want to waste money. People won’t want to read your paper filled with typos, and have to pay for it too.

So I think that there should be more checking for mistakes. While this may cost more, the extra editor assigned to this, despite the cost of his or her salary, will only add to the quality of the paper and increase circulation.

Since people all over the state complain about this problem, it is time to make a change. Whether that editor does a better job or not, it is not fair to those of us who can’t be wasting money on newspaper mistakes.
