Susan R. Berge: Honduras and us
01:00 AM EDT on Monday, July 6, 2009
According to recent newspaper articles, one of the reasons given for the coup in Honduras is that Hondurans were about to vote in a nonbinding referendum that would lead to a constitutional change removing term limits from the presidency. The article in The Journal, “Coup in Honduras condemned,” states, “The referendum . . . was condemned by broad swaths of Honduran society as an obvious power grab.”
Most Americans are unaware that something similar has been proposed in the U.S. Rep. Jose Serrano (D.-N.Y.), 16th District, introduced H.J. Res. 5 in January of this year to repeal the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution. For those not familiar with the Constitution, the 22nd Amendment limits the president to two terms in office. Fortunately, Representative Serrano has no co-sponsors.
In February, H.J. Res. 5 was referred to the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights & Civil Liberties. Hopefully, it will never see the light of day.
Before we condemn what is going on in other countries, we should pay more attention to what is going on right here in America.
