All-Star at last
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, July 10, 2009
The old warrior finally got his due. Tim Wakefield, 42, the long underrated knuckleball specialist of the Boston Red Sox, was thrilled to be tapped for the All-Star game for the first time in his illustrious 17-year career.
We’re thrilled for him.
Mr. Wakefield’s slow, fluttering pitch can instill heart attacks, since if it doesn’t flutter it can be quickly blasted out of the park. But, with iron nerves and a keen brain for strategy, Tim has quietly started more games for the Red Sox than any pitcher in history, and he ranks behind only Cy Young and Roger Clemens in wins for the team. He stands out for a tremendous work ethic, and uncomplaining service to the Sox — as a starter, reliever, whatever.
It’s nice to see one of the good guys in sports win recognition, and here’s wishing him the best of luck on July 14 in St. Louis.
