Editorial: R.I. Tollottery?
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, July 24, 2008
The prospect of tolls at either end of Route 95 gives Rhode Islanders an opportunity to grab the golden ring they missed by voting against a full-bodied casino in 2006.
Paying a toll and making a bet could be easily combined. You could have Quik Pick lanes that would get you through swiftly. Toll takers qualified as croupiers with tables for poker, vingt et un or even roulette wheels slung from their shoulders — like the cigarette girls in Las Vegas — could emerge from their booths to go up the line of cars. Think of how many more people would want to come to Rhode Island!
Of course, there would be a lane for those sticks in the mud who object to gambling. But isn’t driving all about risk anyway?
