Editorial: One big parade
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, May 8, 2008
Not everyone can agree on the proper way or place to hold a parade. The city of Attleboro, for instance, held two Memorial Day parades for decades, all because veterans groups in the city center and South Attleboro could not see eye to eye on the particulars.
Common sense will out, though, and this year, Veterans Services Director Peter Rego brokered a truce. As reported by The Sun Chronicle, in Attleboro, he pushed hard for the principle that two parades essentially (and unnecessarily) double the cost. Each year, the same bands were being hired by both South Attleboro and the city center. And each year, both had to hire police details for traffic control. In addition, the $10,000 annual parade budget had to cover a Veterans Day march.
The disputants yielded. This year, Attleboro will host a single parade and, Mr. Rego suggests, a better one. Among the highlights: a Marine band based in North Carolina will take part. A flyover by fighter jets is planned.
By alternating sites each year, parade organizers will have more dollars to work with. Taking turns seems a beautiful solution. Soon, it may be widely wondered why it was not thought of before.
