Jennifer Siciliano: This Warwickite wants longer runway
01:00 AM EST on Wednesday, February 6, 2008
T.F. Green Airport’s main runway needs to be extended. When I heard about Kevin Dillon becoming the new director of Green and his views and ambitions to lengthen the runway, I thought it might finally happen.
Warwick must get over the fears of airport expansion that might bring more noise, pollution and congestion. These problems can be managed, but the runway extension would bring to the Warwick community a boost in the local economy with more businesses, jobs and tax money.
When combined with the future Warwick train station, this community will be sought after for its asset of being connected to all parts of the country and across the Atlantic to Europe. National businesses will see this and Warwick’s unique natural beauty and want to come here. Warwick residents should be happy and proud that the major Rhode Island airport is in our city.
There were times when the highways were built and towns sprang up off exit ramps and stop-off points. Likewise, the expanded airport will spring businesses, and Warwick will be the beneficiary of the tax dollars coming from office spaces to make this a better city and build on its beautiful natural resources.
Warwick has great potential. And yes, I am a proud Warwick resident.
