Police warn of scam seeking credit card information

01:00 AM EST on Thursday, March 3, 2005

BURRILLVILLE -- The police are warning residents to watch out for telephone scam artists requesting credit card information.

Tuesday evening a Pascoag woman received a call from a man claiming to be from Narragansett Electric Company. He told her that she was behind on her electric bills and the power would be shut off if she did not provide her credit card number to stop the process, said Lt. Kevin San Antonio.

What he didn't know, however, was that the woman was a customer of the Pascoag Utility District -- not Narragansett Electric. She was suspicious and called the police.

"If anybody does get these types of calls, call us, contact the electric company and do not give out any type of this information," San Antonio said.
