AROUND THE TOWN

Dance the night away: University Society of Providence, a singles group will hold a singles dance Saturday, from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., at Knights of Columbus, 1675 Douglas Ave., North Providence.

Arrive before 8 p.m. and admission is $3 for members and $4 for guests. After 8 p.m., members pay $6 and guests $8. Dance lessons begin at 7 p.m. For more information, call 276-3025

AROUND THE TOWN

Health Screening: Our Lady of Fatima Hospital will sponsor a free foot health screening, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the hospital's Ambulatory Care Center, 200 High Service Ave., North Providence.

People with diabetes, foot and heel pain or ulcers, poor circulation, spurs or bunions may want to attend and talk with a board certified podiatrist to discuss a foot care plan that's best for them.

The program is offered in conjunction with the hospital's division of podiatry.

Appointments can be made in advance by calling the hospital at 456-3125.

AT THE LIBRARY

North Providence Union Free Public Library: Hospice Care of the Visiting Nurse Service of Greater Rhode Island is offering a six-week bereavement support program to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The program meets in the conference room at North Providence Union Free Public Library, 1810 Mineral Spring Ave., from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The group is free and open to all. It will be led by Rev. Jeffrey Thomas, Hospice Chaplain.

Fall session computer classes are about to begin at the library.

Registration for Internet-Searching the Web begins this week. Classes will be held the week of Oct. 14.

Registration for Microsoft Word-Basic Word Processing begins the week of Oct. 14. Classes will be held the week of Oct. 20.

Registration for Microsoft Word-Printing, Save and Retrieve Documents, Bullets and Numbering begins the week of Oct. 20. Classes will be held the week of Oct. 27.

Registration for Microsoft Word-Margins, Tables, Tabs begins the week of Oct. 27. Classes will be held the week of Nov. 3

And registration for Microsoft Word-Documents & Templates begins the week of Nov. 3. Classes will be held the week of Nov. 10.

The classes are free and open to the public. Class size is limited to eight per session and registration is required. Participants should register at the circulation desk. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday mornings at 11 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 1 p.m.

LOCAL SPORTS

Baseball meetings: The North Providence West Little League board will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m., in North Providence Union Free Public Library, 1810 Mineral Spring Ave.

The organization will hold a general meeting at 7 p.m. All volunteers are welcome.

PEOPLE

Paula S. Lahoud, of North Providence, will be among seven Community College of Rhode Island alumni honored for their outstanding service to the community and to CCRI in a special knighting ceremony, Oct. 17, at Kirkbrae Country Club, Lincoln.

Lahoud ('67), a member of the second graduating class from Rhode Island Junior College, has been active in the alumni association for the past 37 years. She is a charter member of the CCRI Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps fund a variety of CCRI initiatives. Through her consulting business, Career Focus, Lahoud helps adult learners remove barriers to employment. In addition to her associate's degree, Lahoud holds a bachelor's degree from Marquette University.

Thomas Eccleston Jr., of North Providence, will be posthumously inducted into the Moses Brown School Athletic Hall of Fame at an induction dinner, Oct. 17. The event will be held at the Providence Marriott, Charles and Orms Streets, Providence.

Sponsored by The Moses Brown School Alumni/Alumnae Association, the event will honor former athletes, coaches and athletic administrators whose talent and commitment serves as an ongoing inspiration.

Eccleston is one of 15 legendary athletes and coaches to be honored at this year's induction dinner.

Each inductee will be honored with a plaque in the school's Waughtel-Howe Field House, where students will be able to read about their role models' athletic and personal achievements.

David Ramos, of North Providence, a recently named nursing scholarship recipient received $1,000, part of the scholarship funds from the Albert E. and Florence W. Newton Fund at The Rhode Island Foundation. He is one of nine nursing students to receive scholarship assistance totaling $7,900.

The fund was established through the will of Albert E. Newton, an executive of the Central Lace Works, who died in 1968. It honors him and his late wife, Florence.

Ramos attends the Community College of Rhode Island.
