9/11 rites planned here and abroad as anniversary nears
01:00 AM EDT on Monday, August 18, 2008
Individuals and organizations throughout the world are planning commemorations to mark the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Thus far, nearly 185 America Supports You Freedom Walks, eight of them overseas, are scheduled on and around Sept. 11. America Supports You is a Defense Department program connecting citizens and companies with service members and their families serving at home and abroad.
“This will be a special year for Department of Defense employees, as the National America Supports You Freedom Walk begins a week of commemorations culminating in the opening of the Pentagon Memorial on 9/11,” said Defense Department spokeswoman Allison Barber.
The fourth-annual national America Supports You Freedom Walk will be held on Sept. 7. Participants will leave the Women’s Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery at 9 a.m. and will proceed about one mile to the Pentagon’s south parking lot, near the site where American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the building.
More information is available at the America Supports You Web site, www.americasupportsyou.mil/americasupportsyou/index.aspx.
Job hunting made easier for disabled veterans
Disabled veterans seeking employment have a new online tool available to tackle that task. Job Opportunities for Disabled American Veterans, a national online recruitment service, offers an application geared specifically to help disabled veterans find work.
The goal is to connect disabled American veterans with employers who are proactive in hiring them and is a free service to disabled veterans. Employers listing job openings on the site pay a nominal fee to help maintain the site.
The site offers resumé writing tips as well as pointers on how to give a good interview. Veterans must register with the site to search the job listings.
Disabled veterans also can take advantage of recruitABILITY, an application that DisABLEDperson Inc. offers to the wider disabled community. Many state and federal agencies, along with 1,200 employers nationally, are using recruitABILITY as a recruitment tool to find skilled workers with disabilities. For more information visit Job Opportunities for Disabled American Veterans online at www.jofdav.com and its sister site, www.disabledperson.com.
