Dedication of new monument, parade set for Veterans Day

Rhode Island will mark Veterans Day, Nov. 11, in Providence with a parade and the dedication of the new World War II Memorial.

The marchers will step off from the State House at 2:15 and proceed to Memorial Park, on South Main Street across from the Licht Judicial Complex, where the memorial ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.

The parade will form up at 1:30. Floats and vehicles will be available for veterans who wish to ride in the parade, and volunteers will be on hand to assist those in wheelchairs.

The event will be held rain or shine. Those interested in marching should should notify the organizers by Nov. 6. Call Ginny Hanson at (401) 846-6932 or Ernest Pitochelli at (401) 943-4935. Veterans who need transportation to Providence should call Carol Annarino at (401) 353-8694 or John DeFusco at (401) 944-0328. Volunteer drivers are also needed and should call those numbers.

Iraqi interpreter to address Army group

The Rhode Island Chapter of the Association of the United States Army will honor personnel nominated by Army Reserve and National Guard units as outstanding soldiers of the year, in a Nov. 15 event that will feature an address by an Iraqi citizen who performed interpreter services for the Army.

The event, free and open to the public, will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Quonset O Club, in North Kingstown.

The Rhode Island Chapter of the Association of the United States Army will honor Rhode Island’s outstanding soldiers of the year from U.S. Army, Army Reserve and Army Guard units on Nov. 15 at the Quonset O Club in North Kingstown, starting with a reception and cash bar at 6:30 p.m.

Qussay Al-Attabi served as an interpreter with the 549th MP Company, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the 315th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He will discuss life under Saddam Hussein’s regime and his role with the U.S. forces in Iraq.

Al-Attabi, who had to leave his homeland because of death threats against him and his family, is teaching an Arabic language class at Roger Williams University while pursuing a Ph.D. in English literature at Brown University.

Soldiers, noncommissioned officers, drill sergeants and recruiters of the year who have been selected by their units will be recognized and honored at the event. And several Army recruits will take the oath of enlistment.

Post’s Vogel to speak at War College Museum

Steve Vogel, the military reporter for The Washington Post, will discuss his new book, The Pentagon: A History — The Untold Story of the Wartime Race to Build the Pentagon and to Restore it Sixty Years Later, on Friday at noon in the Newport Naval War College Museum.

The construction of the Pentagon, atop a wasteland known as Hells Bottom by the Potomac River in 17 months as the U.S. entered World War II, was one of the great public works feats in American history.

Vogel’s lecture is open to the public; reservations must be made 24 hours in advance by those without military ID or Defense Department vehicle passes. Call (401) 841-2101 or e-mail museum@nwc.navy.mil no later than noon Thursday.

Job fair Nov. 13

NETWORKri, based in the Providence office of the state Department of Labor and Training, will hold a job fair for veterans from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 13, at 1 Reservoir Ave. in Providence. About 35 companies are expected to be represented.

Flu vaccination clinics

The Providence VA Medical Center, at 830 Chalkstone Ave., will hold a flu and pneumovax shot clinic for enrolled veterans already under the VA medical center’s care on Friday. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the FIRM 2 waiting area. No appointment is needed. Other clinics will be held on Nov. 26, from 1 to 5:30 p.m.; Nov. 27, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Dec. 14, from 8 a.m. to noon, and Jan.16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pneumovax shots are needed only every 10 years. Veterans’ spouses are not eligible to receive the flu shot. For more information call the VA at (401) 457-3336.

Advisory Council on Veterans Affairs

The council’s quarterly meeting is set for 1 p.m. today in the Pastore Complex’s Pasteur Building 57, 600 New London Ave., Cranston. The session will be held in the first-floor conference room in the west wing.

Navy Armed Guard

Members will meet at noon Thursday at Bickford’s restaurant, Jefferson Boulevard, Warwick.

American Legion

Post 10 on Willett Avenue, in Riverside, will meet Thursday at 7 p.m.

Vietnam Veterans of America

Chapter 325 will meet Thursday, at 7:30 p.m., at 1958 Kingstown Rd., Peace Dale.

Pawtucket Veterans Council

The council will meet at 2 p.m. Friday at Gatchell VFW Post 306, 171 Fountain St., Pawtucket.

United Veterans Council of R.I.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in second-floor conference room B at the state administration building, at 1 Capitol Hill, Providence.
