Veterans Day observances set in several communities

Tomorrow, Veterans Day, Americans pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the men and women have worn the uniform of the United States, protecting our nation’s ideals and answering the call to duty in war and peace.

President Bush has proclaimed Nov. 9-15 as National Veterans Awareness Week and encourages all Americans to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans through ceremonies and prayers. The following is a brief list of events tomorrow. See the complete list online at projothebeat.com.

•Chapter 325 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, at the Vietnam Memorial Stone in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, at 7 a.m., to honor deceased and missing veterans with the “Reading of the Stone Tablets.”

•Special Forces Association, R.I. Chapter 48, at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery at 8:30 a.m., at the Special Forces Memorial, followed by breakfast at Camp Fogarty, Kelley Hall / Bldg. A-7, East Greenwich, at 9:30 a.m.

•Armstrong-Gladding American Legion Post 69, at Spring Vale Cemetery, 1125 Pawtucket Ave., Rumford, 9 a.m. wreath ceremony with taps and a National Guard color guard at the Walter Gladding grave site.

•American Legion Post 18 and Auxiliary Unit 18, at Portsmouth Town Hall, 9:30 a.m., Veterans Day speech and wreath ceremony

•East Greenwich Veterans Day parade, 10 a.m. from Academy Field to Town Hall followed by a free collation for all at American Legion Post 15, 1016 Main St., with doughnuts, hot dogs, beans, macaroni, soda and coffee.

•American Legion Post 101, at the Howard Hill Road memorial site in Foster, at 11 a.m., for a Veterans Day observance ceremony open to the public.

•Burrillville Allied Veterans Council, at Veterans Park, The Bridgeway, Pascoag, at 11 a.m., for the annual Veteran’s Day ceremony.

•Pawtucket Veterans Council, at Veterans Memorial Park, Exchange Street and Roosevelt Avenue, 11 a.m., annual service.

•United Veterans Council of Newport County and Newport VFW Post 406, on the lawn of Newport City Hall, at 11 a.m., ceremony featuring a speaker, local veterans’ groups, the Newport Artillery Company, the Rogers High School Army Junior ROTC and city and legislative officials.

•Fort Taber Fort Rodman Historical Association, 1000C South Rodney French Blvd., New Bedford, open house starting at 11 a.m., with coffee and pastries available to veterans and visitors to the museum; four restored World War I posters will be unveiled at 1 p.m.

•U.S. Submarine Veterans — Groton Base, at the U. S. Submarine Veterans World War II National Memorial East at Bridge and Thames streets in Groton, at 11 a.m., for the “Tolling of the Boats” ceremony which recognizes the loss of all U.S. submarines.

DAV outreach schedule

Due to an increase in the number of veterans seeking the services of Disabled American Veterans benefits counselors at the Providence regional office, counselors will take to the road to reach additional veterans who have difficulty getting to Providence.

The outreach schedule for this month includes the following sessions, which do not require appointments: Thursday, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Warwick Veterans Center, 2038 Warwick Ave.; Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Hyannis (Mass.) Outpatient Clinic, 145 Falmouth Rd.; and Nov. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at New Bedford’s Vet Center, 468 North St. The DAV regional office in Providence will be closed for Thanksgiving on Nov. 27 and 28.

•Eighth Air Force

The Rhode Island chapter meets at 11 this morning at Bickford’s Restaurant, 1802 Post Rd., Warwick.

•Marine Corps League

Newport’s Higgins Detachment meets at 7:30 tonight at the Mainstay Inn, 151 Admiral Kalbfus Rd., to celebrate the Marine Corps’ 233rd birthday.

•Veterans of Foreign Wars

Washington County Post 916, at 155 High St., Wakefield, will meet at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. At 1 p.m. Saturday, the Department of Rhode Island auxiliary will visit the Rhode Island Veterans Home, on Metacom Avenue in Bristol, for a Veterans Day ceremony.

•Fleet Reserve Association

Quonset/Davisville Branch and Unit 42 will meet tomorrow evening at 7 in the Davisville Seabee Museum, 1 Iafrate Rd.

•Korean War Veterans

Northern R.I. Chapter 3 will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Chepachet Senior Center, 1210 Putnam Pike. West Bay Chapter 2 will meet Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in VFW Post 449, 197 Providence St., West Warwick.

•Coast Guard Auxiliary

Flotilla 78 and guests will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Aspray Boathouse, Pawtuxet Village, Warwick.

•American Legion

Post 39 will meet Thursday at 7 p.m., at 1958 Kingstown Rd., Peace Dale.

•Disabled American Veterans

Mount Pleasant Chapter 21 will meet Thursday at 7 p.m.in VFW Post 10011, 354 Fruit Hill Ave., North Providence.

•Reserve Officers

The Rhode Island Department’s executive committee will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Harwood Army Reserve Center, 385 Niagara St., Providence.

•Military Officers Association

Narragansett Bay Chapter will hold a buffet dinner meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at Chelo’s restaurant, 2225 Post Rd., Warwick. The speaker will be Roberta Humble. Reservations must be made by today by phoning Bob Mason at (401) 294-4824.

•Seabee Veterans of America

Island X-1 Davisville will meet at the Seabee Museum, 21 Iafrate Way, North Kingstown, on Saturday at 9 a.m.

•Battle of the Bulge Veterans

Rhode Island Chapter 24 will meet Saturday at noon, in Barrington’s American Legion Post 8, on Legion Way. Call Manny at (401) 253-7369 to reserve $7 tickets for the Dec. 13 macaroni luncheon.

•WAVES National

Ocean State Unit 118 will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday in the state Department of Administration building, One Capitol Hill, Smith Street, Providence.
