Health care for General Assembly:
Who pays and who doesn't

The General Assembly is again considering legislation that would require members to pay a portion of their health care premiums, which cost $17,908.32 for each family plan and $6,408 for each individual plan.

Most lawmakers already pay a portion of the premiums voluntarily, while some do not. Of the 113 members of the General Assembly, 21 receive health care coverage and pay nothing; 60 receive coverage and pay a portion of the premium; 15 do not take coverage but accept the $2,002 payment in lieu of taking insurance; 14 take no coverage and decline the $2,002 payment; and 3 do not take insurance and return 10 percent of the $2,002 payment.

House bill 5035 would require legislators to pay 10 percent of their health insurance costs, and H5474 would impose a 20 percent share of the costs.

The table is sorted by amount paid by legislator. Click column headings to sort differently.
