Reed to speak at Democratic Convention
01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Reed
Sen. Jack Reed will discuss national security on night three of next week’s Democratic National Convention in Denver.
The theme of that day — Wednesday — is “Securing America’s Future.” The convention’s Web site states that those listed to speak share presidential candidate and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s “vision of making America stronger.”
Reed, an Army veteran, and Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., accompanied Obama to Iraq and Afghanistan last month.
“They’re both experts on foreign policy,” Obama said of Reed and Hagel before the July trip. “They reflect, I think, a traditional bipartisan wisdom when it comes to foreign policy. Neither of them are ideologues, but [they] try to get the facts right and make a determination about what’s best for U.S. interests — and they’re good guys.”
Reed could not be reached for comment last night.
He has been mentioned as a possible running mate for Obama but has said he doesn’t expect to be asked and would prefer to remain a senator.
In addition to Reed, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley are listed to speak Wednesday. Obama’s still-to-be-named vice presidential choice will headline the evening.
