Inmate deaths

A total of 62 prisoners have died while at the Adult Correctional Institutions since Jan. 1, 2000, according to data provided by the Department of Corrections. Causes vary from brain aneurysms to drug overdoses to cancer. Several causes are undetermined, even years later, and many are attributed to suicide.
2009: Four deaths. Two causes are pending; one is attributed to natural causes from heart disease; and the other is “positional asphyxia,” which describes the March 27 death of James Davis-Reed.
2008: Six deaths. One asphyxia by hanging; four pending; and the other cancer.
2007: Nine deaths. One suicide by sliced wrist; three pending or unknown; another blunt impact injuries on the head and torso; and four attributed to health conditions, including a brain aneurysm and a heart attack.
2006: Eight deaths. Two suicides — one by hanging and another by a sliced neck; one drug overdose; two pending; and three health conditions, including complications from AIDS and cardiac arrhythmia.
2005: Two deaths. One suicide by hanging; one from a lack of oxygen to the brain due to a shampoo bottle accidentally lodged in the throat.
2004: Seven deaths. Two suicides by hanging; one drug overdose; one unknown; and three health conditions, including heart problems.
2003: Nine deaths. Three suicides by hanging; one drug overdose; and five from health conditions, including three cancer-related and two heart problems.
2002: Eight deaths. Two suicides by hanging; one from opiate withdrawal; and five health-related conditions, including a brain tumor and cancer.
2001: Three deaths. Two cancer-related and one from complications from HIV.
2000: Six deaths. Four suicides, including two by hanging, one by a drug overdose, one by head injuries suffered after jumping off a wall; and two health conditions, including liver and heart problems
