Over the last few years, former Gov. Bruce Sundlun has been accused of speeding and aggressive driving. He has been involved in minor accidents. This history has led two police departments to ask the state Division of Motor Vehicles to review his ability to drive safely. He passed one state driving test in 2007, and says he can pass another.

Records for the last three years are more detailed than earlier records because of policies of some police departments and state agencies, which require destruction of records after a specified period. But a Journal review of police reports, witness statements, and records from the state DMV Operator Control show:

•June 25, 2003, North Kingstown: Sundlun backs his Jaguar into another car at a Shell gas pump. The other driver tells the police that she honked her horn at him, but he continued backing up. Sundlun denies the allegation. No charges.

•Sept. 22, 2006, North Kingstown: Sundlun gets verbal warning for driving 57 mph in a 25-mph zone.

•Oct. 26, 2006, East Greenwich: Sundlun backs into another car while parallel parking. No charges.

• Nov. 8, 2006, North Kingstown: Sundlun gets verbal warning for speeding on Post Road, 25-mph zone.

•June 25, 2007, North Kingstown: Sundlun gets into an accident. Other driver says Sundlun hit his car twice while turning into the Marshall’s parking lot. Sundlun tells the other driver, “You should slow down, young man,” and then goes to Marshall’s to shop. No charges.

•June 26, 2007, North Kingstown: Off-duty lieutenant sees Sundlun cut off another motorist and nearly collide with another car while driving on Route 4 and Allentown Road. The following day, the police ask the Division of Motor Vehicles for “immediate threat suspension/revocation” of Sundlun’s license, citing Sundlun’s “age, frequency and type of accidents, diminished hearing and denial of responsibility.” Sundlun refuses to surrender his license.

•Sept. 14, 2007, state DMV’s Operator Control: Sundlun fails to complete driver evaluation. License is suspended.

•Oct. 24, 2007, state DMV: Sundlun passes road test; his license is reinstated.

•Feb. 19, 2008, University of Rhode Island, Kingston campus: Sundlun is accused of verbally abusing a URI police officer who told him to change his parking place for the day, then nearly running over a professor who uses a cane. Prof. Joanna Norris said Sundlun sped toward her as she crossed the road and narrowly missed running her over. “I was very frightened,” Norris said in a statement forwarded to the attorney general’s office. After braking, she said, Sundlun “rolled down his window, and shouted at me, ‘That’s a good way to get yourself killed.’ … His tone was very angry. I was shaking all over.” No charges; the URI Police refer the matter to the URI Human Resources office.

•Sept. 29, 2008, Jamestown: Sundlun passes stopped school bus. Bus driver reports on Oct. 1 that Sundlun floored the accelerator and sped past the bus, which was stopped with its red lights flashing. Sundlun fights in Traffic Tribunal. Charge is dismissed because officer put wrong date on complaint.

•Nov. 5, 2008, URI: Sundlun reported as an aggressive driver. Sundlun is seen driving his black Buick out of Tucker House without stopping, nearly causing an accident, and then driving through a stop sign on Upper College Road, nearly causing a second accident. “A student that was trying to cross the road near the University Club had to quickly step back onto the sidewalk in order to avoid being struck.” URI Police Maj. Stephen Baker contacts Vice President Robert Weygand about Sundlun’s driving.

•Dec. 2, 2008, URI: Major Baker sends letter telling Sundlun of complaints about his driving and the risk of injury. Baker asks to meet with Sundlun to discuss the matter; the intent “is to ensure the safety of all the members of the URI community, you included.”

•March 23, 2009, Jamestown: Sundlun drives with expired license, fails to obey stop sign, and drives on the wrong side of the roadway. Sundlun doesn’t stop for police flashing lights and continues for another half-mile before stopping for siren. Officer says Sundlun’s failure to stop was due to his reduced ability to hear. He pays fine and renews his license.

• March 27, 2009, URI, Kingston campus: Sundlun drives on the sidewalk, forcing two pedestrians to jump out of the way. He tells the police later that his card for opening the gate was stuck in the machine, and says “he drove carefully down the sidewalk.” Major Baker reports that future complaints may have to be addressed with sanction or citation.

•April 7, 2009, URI: Sundlun is accused of hitting an unattended parked car. He drives off, but a witness takes down his license plate and reports it. Sundlun says he wrote the car’s owner a letter asking for proof that he hit her vehicle.

•April 13, 2009, Jamestown: Sundlun is cited for running a stop sign at North Road and Narragansett Avenue. He disagreed with the citation, but paid the fine.

•April 28, 2009, Jamestown: The police send a request to the state Division of Motor Vehicle to take action against Sundlun’s license.
