SCITUATE — Five criminal-justice officials from the Eastern European Republic of Moldova are touring institutions of civil society in Rhode Island, hosted by District 7950 of the Rotary Club International in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The tour, Informing the [Moldovan] Public About Combating Corruption, is sponsored by the Open World Program. Open World is a U.S. government-financed initiative that brings representatives of emerging democracies in Europe and Asia to the United States for a glimpse of American-style democracy.

Their tour, from Saturday through Wednesday, will include stops at the state prison, and visits with officials of the state Ethics Commission, Board of Elections, state police and attorney general’s department, among others, according to Micheline Lombardi, co-coordinator of the tour and a member of the Scituate Rotary Club. Lombardi is Providence County supervisor of adult probation and parole for the state Department of Corrections.

While in Rhode Island the officials will be accompanied by an interpreter and a facilitator and will live with families in Scituate and Foster. They will later tour Massachusetts.
