How to be ready for an emergency
09:45 AM EST on Monday, December 19, 2005
Stock up on:
* A gallon of water per person daily -- enough to last three to seven days
* Nonperishable packaged or canned foods, with a nonelectric can opener and cooking tools
* Blankets, pillows, extra clothing, toiletries and special items for the elderly or children
* An all-purpose disaster supply kit, including a first aid kit, medications, flashlight and batteries, a battery-operated NOAA weather radio, cash, keys, tools and important documents inside a waterproof container
Get ready:
* Locate the safest room or area in your house.
* Determine escape routes from your house and places to meet family members ahead of time, whether at a friend's or relative's house, a hotel or at a public shelter.
* Keep the fuel tank in your car filled.
* Gather your pet's identification and immunization records, food and water and a muzzle and leash for dogs.
