Holiday giving: What you can do

Following is a final list of giving campaigns under way for the end-of-year holidays.
Feinstein money added to your donation
From Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, donations made to any local charities will be matched by the Feinstein Foundation, with its fund of $100,000. If the total raised from the challenge exceeds $100,000, as is expected, the $100,000 will be divided proportionately among all participating agencies. For an organization to receive matching money, it must send proof of its tax-exempt status (or affiliation with a tax-exempt group) with a typed letter bearing the organization's full name and address. The letter must cite the organization's total number of donors and total amount of money raised from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. Only money or food value raised from use of the Feinstein challenge should be reported. (Food items should be valued at $1 per item or pound.) AIDS Care Ocean State: This AIDS service organization seeks monetary donations to help brighten the holiday season for families served by the agency. AIDS Project Rhode Island : This agency seeks cash donations, store gift cards, new clothing and toys, nonperishable food items and personal hygiene items. The greatest need is for teens and adults. Assumption BVM Church: This church seeks donations of money and gift certificates for food, as well as nonperishable food such as stuffing mix, gravy, boxed potatoes, cranberry sauce, cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, juice, coffee, tea and cocoa. Big Sisters Fund: This organization is looking for your old clothes (any size, season or gender) and working household items. For home pickups, call 464-6500 or toll free (877) 725-6843. Items may also be dropped off at 40 Webb St., Cranston, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. or Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tax receipts are provided for all donations.
Bradford Jonnycake Center: This emergency financial assistance center serving residents of Westerly, Hopkinton, Charlestown and Richmond seeks monetary donations. The thrift store, 16 North Main St., Bradford, is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Checks should be mailed to P.O. Box 273, Bradford, RI 02808. Butler Hospital Gifts for Patients: This private, nonprofit psychiatric and substance-abuse hospital located at 345 Blackstone Blvd., Providence, seeks donors to fulfill a wish list of clothing, toys, games and other items for patients of all ages who are unable to go home for the holidays. Camp Street Community Ministries: Serving Providence's Mount Hope neighborhood, the ministries seek toys, books and games for children from 1 to 16, toiletries, socks, tights, stationery and trinkets for men and women. Cardi's Furniture Superstores: The stores, in West Warwick, South Attleboro and Swansea, will collect new and like-new toys and clothing for the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots Drive. Child and Family Services of Newport: The agency seeks donors who would like to adopt one of the client families for gifts and a holiday meal. Donors choose the size of the family. Gifts must be delivered to the agency tomorrow or Wednesday. Call Martha Parks at 848-4210.
Children's Friend: The agency seeks to help more than 400 families by matching sponsors with families for whom they will buy gifts and wrapping materials to be delivered to the agency at 153 Summer St., Providence, RI 02903. Cash donations for gift certificates to grocery and department stores, new coats, hats, gloves, socks and underwear for all ages are also needed.
The Children's Holiday Hope Fund: Hasbro Inc. and The Providence Journal are encouraging Rhode Islanders to help those most in need this holiday season through a new joint charitable effort. The program will provide children with toys and games, as well as much-needed hats and mittens. All children under the services of the Rhode Island Department of Human Services will receive hats and mittens, and a toy donated through a participating agency. The toys are being donated by Hasbro. Donations, which will be used for the hats and mittens, may be sent to The Providence Journal, c/o the Santa Fund, 75 Fountain St., Providence, RI 02902. Crossroads Rhode Island: This agency, which provides comprehensive services and support to homeless and disconnected persons throughout Rhode Island, seeks monetary donations as well as new hats, gloves and mittens of all sizes, scarves, socks, personal care items, towels and facecloths, phone cards, new clothing, new unwrapped toys and supermarket, pharmacy and retail gift certificates. The Darfur Action Network at Brown University: In an effort to raise funds for humanitarian relief in Darfur, Sudan, this group has created holiday cards stating that a donation has been made on the recipient's behalf. The East Bay Child & Adolescent Service System Program: This branch of a statewide human resources/case management program for children with emotional, mental, and/or behavioral challenges, seeks board games and other items appropriate for the 6-12 age group. East Greenwich Department of Human Services: The East Greenwich Department of Human Services will provide Christmas baskets to assist 200 families during the holiday season. It is also sponsoring the adopt-a-family program in East Greenwich and seeks donations of brand-new toys as well as volunteers who are interested in adopting families. Elmwood Community Center: The center, located at 155 Niagara St., Providence, RI 02907, seeks gift certificates, turkeys, potatoes, ham, rice and other food for the holiday. The Kent Center's Adopt-a-Family Program: The center's Youth & Family Services Division seeks individuals, families and businesses to adopt Kent Center families who are facing mental health challenges and financial difficulties. Rhode Island Community Food Bank: The food bank, 200 Niantic Ave., Providence, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays to accept donations of turkeys for distribution to low-income families for Christmas. Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families: DCYF, in conjunction with the Rhode Island Foster Parents Association, the Rhode Island Council of Resource Providers for Children, Youth and Families (RICORP), and Adoption Rhode Island, seeks gifts for teens and groups willing to "adopt" an adolescent group home and provide gifts for the residents. St. Patrick Church Holiday Dinner: The church seeks monetary donations and volunteers to serve Christmas dinner to those who are needy or would otherwise be alone for the holiday. Meals will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:15 to 2:30 at St. Patrick Church, 244 Smith St., Providence. Volunteers must register in advance by calling 274-6286.

Slater Mill Giving Trees: Slater Mill will conduct an outerwear accessory drive at both the Visitor Center at 175 Main St., Pawtucket, and at the Slater Mill Heritage Gift Shop located at 67 Roosevelt Ave., Pawtucket. There will be an undecorated giving tree in each location. Donors are asked to decorate the trees with new hats, scarves and gloves, all of which will be given to the Pawtucket corps of the Salvation Army to distribute. Sojourner House: Sojourner House's "Share the Spirit" program helps client families experiencing domestic abuse have happier holidays. Transformation House: This home for women reentering society from prison, located at 16 Wiolma Schesler Lane, Cranston, seeks presents for the women and their children, toiletries, comforters/quilts, sheets, blankets and work-appropriate clothing for women. Call 462-0697.
The Turning: This nonprofit, which provides transitional housing for homeless men and women who are recovering from substance abuse, seeks monetary donations, gift cards and food to provide gifts and a Christmas dinner for the 24 residents in the program.
