NEW ORLEANS -- Projo.com, the Web site of The Providence Journal, has been named best overall newspaper site in its size category, in the annual EPpy awards competition sponsored by Editor & Publisher magazine.
The award was among those announced yesterday at E & P's Interactive Media Conference and Trade Show.
Projo.com won over two finalists in the category of best newspaper-affiliated site under 1-million unique monthly Web site visitors. The two other finalists were OCRegister.com, the Web site of The Orange County Register in California, and Get Out! (Amarillo.com), the Web site of the Amarillo Globe-News in Texas.
NYTimes.com was the winner in the same category with over 1 million monthly visitors. Boston.com was a finalist.
The EPpy Awards, an international competition now in its 10th year, honor the best work in the Internet field by media outlets, including newspapers, radio, magazines, and broadcast/cable.
Projo.com, which launched in 1996, was a finalist in the 2004 EPpy competition for coverage of the aftermath of The Station fire disaster, in the category of best special feature. In 2003, it was an EPpy finalist in the category of most creative use of the medium for its Station fire presentation.
