9 law enforcement officers slain on duty since 1952

Before the death of Detective James Allen, at least eight other Rhode Island law enforcement officers were killed while on duty in the last 80 years. Here is a list of those deaths from Journal files and other sources:

Dec. 27, 2001: East Providence police Capt. Alister C. McGregor was accidentally shot and killed by another officer during a SWAT team training exercise.

Jan. 29, 2000: Two Providence police officers shot and killed fellow Patrolman Cornel Young Jr., who was off-duty and in plain clothes, trying to break up a fracas outside Fidas, an all-night restaurant on Valley Street. A grand jury cleared the two officers, Carlos A. Saraiva and Michael Solitro III, an eight-day rookie. Young's mother, Leisa, is pursuing a civil suit against the city.

Oct. 12, 1995: Providence Park Ranger William Abrahamson was killed in a struggle with two armed youths who were walking through Roger Williams Park.

Feb. 3, 1994: Providence Patrolman Steven M. Shaw, 27, was shot in the head by robbery suspect Corey L. Fields, who was hiding in an apartment closet when Shaw entered the room.

May 10, 1988: Brown University police officer Joseph Doyle died of injuries he suffered in March in a scuffle with a campus intruder.

June 22, 1973: Rhode Island Correctional Officer Donald Price was stabbed to death by an inmate at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston.

June 30, 1958: Pawtucket Detective Lt. Thomas Truesdale and Detective Emil Newburg, both were killed by a gunman.

Sept. 30, 1952: Pawtucket officer Charles Patenaude was gunned down by a bank robber.
