FBI gets West Warwick papers
08:17 AM EDT on Monday, October 23, 2006
WEST WARWICK -- The FBI last week subpoenaed Town Hall documents concerning zoning and foreclosure work performed for the town by Senate President Joseph A. Montalbano’s law firm, Town Councilwoman Jeanne-Marie DiMasi confirmed yesterday.
Town Manager Wolfgang Bauer turned over the documents to agents who came to Town Hall on Friday, DiMasi said. She said she was told later that the material amounted only to “some folders … It was not that much. Not boxloads” of documents, she said.
Bauer and Town Council President John J. Flynn did not return calls seeking comment yesterday.
In June, the citizens group Operation Clean Government filed a complaint with the state Ethics Commission asserting that Montalbano failed to mention his business relationship with the town in the annual financial disclosure statements that he is required to file as a public official.
Montalbano’s North Providence law firm, Montalbano and Montalbano, has been paid $86,329 by the town since 2003 for legal work that included clearing the titles on two properties that abut the prospective site of a casino in the West Warwick Business Park.
