N. Kingstown woman, Providence man arrested on drug charges

01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, June 17, 2009

SCITUATE — A 37-year-old woman who, the police say, was receiving large packages of marijuana at her home in North Kingstown, and an alleged Jamaican drug trafficker living in Providence to whom she was giving the drugs, were arrested Friday on drug charges.

The state police credited the arrests of Elizabeth L. Mahoney, of 69 Shady Lea Rd., North Kingstown, and Orville G. Watson, of 119 Alger Ave., Providence, to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area unit and troopers from the Wickford barracks.

According to the state police, Mahoney’s home was under surveillance. The police say they saw her accept delivery on Friday of two parcel post packages sent from California and, with Watson, place the packages into a parked car.

After arresting both and finding some marijuana in a search of Mahoney’s apartment, state police obtained warrants allowing them to search the packages and Watson’s Providence residence. They say they seized more than 50 pounds of marijuana, $6,189 in cash, a stolen .40-caliber gun, shipping receipts and drug paraphernalia and packaging material.

Watson, who was placed on an immigration detainer requested by the Bureau of Immigration, Customs and Enforcement, was charged with possession of more than 5 kilograms of marijuana, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm while committing a crime of violence, possession of a stolen firearm and conspiracy. Mahoney was charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to deliver and conspiracy.

Both were arraigned and ordered held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions pending a bail review in District Court.
