W. Greenwich bridge work to close one lane of Route 95
01:00 AM EST on Wednesday, November 4, 2009
PROVIDENCE — The state Department of Transportation said Tuesday that construction associated with the Weaver Hill Road bridge project in West Greenwich will require the brief closure of one lane of travel on Route 95 south on Wednesday. When the lane reopens, truck traffic will be affected for a two-day period.
The DOT is scheduled to close the left travel lane on the bridge, between Exit 6 [Route 3] and Exit 5 [Route 102], between 10 a.m. and noon for concrete placement. When the lane reopens, all truck traffic will be required to use the right lane only. This restriction will be in place until early Friday morning.
While the new concrete will be poured in an area that is closed to traffic, establishing the right lane as a truck lane will reduce vibration on the bridge during the initial curing time for the new concrete.
All traffic should reduce speed and exercise caution in this work zone, the DOT said. Travel lanes at the bridge are currently split by a temporary barrier, with one lane to the left and one lane to the right of the split. The split-lane traffic pattern will be in place until later this month.
The $4.4-million project began earlier this year and is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2011. The project involves rehabilitation and widening of two separate bridge structures that carry Route 95 north and south over Weaver Hill Road, approximately one mile south of Exit 6. The bridges are more than 40 years old.
Oversized vehicles are required to use Exits 5 and 6 and follow Route 3 to detour around the construction area until the split-lane traffic pattern is removed.
