Here are some events and meetings in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in Rhode Island.
PFLAG meeting: James Robinson, executive director of Youth Pride, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), South/Central Rhode Island Chapter, Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Westminster Unitarian Church, 119 Kenyon Ave., East Greenwich.

Youth support group: The Way Out, Youth Pride’s weekly peer-led support group, meets every Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at 171 Chestnut St., Providence. Young people ages 13 to 23 are welcome to meet in a safe environment and discuss issues that they find important.

AIDS fundraiser: The first Bar AIDS Rhode Island will take place tomorrow at three establishments which will donate 25 percent of their sales to AIDS Project RI, a division of Family Service of RI.
Participating bars and clubs are: MiraBar, 35 Richmond St., and Muldowneys Pub, 121 Empire St., both in Providence, and Scotty’s Big Dawg’s Pub, 823 West Main Rd., Number 10, Middletown.

Discussion group: Political correctness will be the topic at the next meeting of The Philosophy Connection, a free GLBT discussion group, on Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the R.I. Pride Center, 180 Allens Ave.

Reading: Author and Providence resident Gary Zebrun will read from his new novel, Only the Lonely, at Books on the Square, Wayland Square, Angell Street, Providence, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m.
It is the story of two Arab-American brothers, one gay and the other a wannabe terrorist, set in the months preceding Sept. 11, 2001. About it Publishers Weekly writes: “With his memorable cast and nicely underplayed big themes, Zebrun delivers a new and worthy perspective on the 9/11 experience.”
PFLAG in Providence: Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Greater Providence Chapter, will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 6:45 p.m. at the MET School, 325 Public St., Providence.

AIDS fundraiser: Imperial Court of Rhode Island presents Kamikaze Drag!, a fundraiser for AIDS Care Ocean State, on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Club Gallery, 150 Point St., Providence.
The event is hosted by Lady Sarah Beyers. Emcee is Kitty Litter. Donation at the door is $10.
PGMC: The Providence Gay Men’s Chorus has announced two new staff positions.
Ray Sirico has been named the group’s first general manager and Roberta Adams has been named development coordinator.
Sirico, a chorus member since its beginning as a 12-member group in 1995, has served on the board of directors and has helped with the administrative needs of the chorus.
Adams is the former director of education and public programs at the Delaware Art Museum and also served as interim director of development at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts.
Marriage Equality RI: Marriage Equality Rhode Island Education Fund, a nonprofit 501(c) 3, announces its new board of directors: Susan Heroux, chairwoman; Rich Hite, vice chairman; the Rev. Linda Shevlin, secretary; C. Kelly Smith, treasurer; and Joyce Anderle, Patrick Crowley, Eugene Dyszlewski, Stephen Hartley, Karen Loewy, Kevin Nelson, Peter Quesnel and Tiffany Rauch-Dickson.
Susan MacNeil has joined the fund as the director of development and communications. For the last nine years, she has served as executive director of AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region, in Keene, N.H.
Rep. Frank Ferri, D-Warwick, owner of Town Hall Lanes, recently donated the shoe rental fee from the 13-week Big Gay Al’s Bowling League tournament to the nonprofit education fund. A check for $1,400 was presented at the league award celebration.
Jobs open: seaQuel (Southeast Asian Queers United for Empowerment and Leadership) is seeking young people interested in working with both the Southeast Asian and GLBTQQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer and Questioning) communities to apply for two Organizing Circle representative positions.
seaQuel is a program of the Providence Youth Student Movement, an organization dedicated to confronting and ending street, state and interpersonal violence affecting the Southeast Asian community in Rhode Island. The organization is led by its core program, the Organizing Circle (OC). In the OC, Southeast Asian youth are mentored and trained to become critical thinkers, leaders and activists for social change.
