Dozens displaced, no injuries in fires in Warwick and Central Falls

01:00 AM EST on Saturday, January 10, 2009

Two fires erupted last night, one in Central Falls and the other in Warwick, but no one was injured in either blaze.

Central Falls firefighters responded to a triple-decker at 34 Darlington St. at 5 p.m. Battalion Chief John Garvey said the fire apparently started on the first floor.

“The damage on the two upper floors is mainly smoke damage but the first floor unit is uninhabitable,” Garvey said. The Red Cross helped the displaced residents find lodging for the night, Garvey said. The fire marshal is investigating the cause.

At 6:07 p.m., Warwick firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire at the Brookside Village apartment complex, at 3687 Post Rd. They found heavy smoke that was visible for a half-mile billowing from Building 4, which contains 12 apartment units. Adjacent Building 3, also with 12 units, was affected and residents from both buildings were evacuated.

According to Battalion Chief Dave Goslin, the fire started in the heating system of a maintenance building connected to Building 4 and spread swiftly to the apartments.

Up to 48 residents were displaced and the Red Cross was helping them find accommodations for the night, Goslin said. He said the fire is under investigation but appears to be accidental.
