In N.H., train hits, kills person
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, March 16, 2008
An Amtrak train struck and killed a person a half-mile away from a New Hampshire station on Friday night, a day after another train accident killed a track worker in Providence.
The unidentified person was struck by the Vermonter train just after 7 p.m. near the Claremont, N.H., station, close to the Vermont state line, Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said.
None of the 68 people on the train from Washington, D.C., to St. Albans, Vt., was hurt. Passengers were bused to their final destination as Amtrak and local authorities investigated.
Meanwhile, the track worker who was killed Thursday when he was struck by a Boston-bound Acela train was identified as Gary Graves, a retired Amtrak employee who was working as a contractor.
Two other workers inspecting the tracks near the Providence station were injured. None of the 168 people aboard the train was hurt.
Graves, 65, of Delaware, worked as a contractor for HNTB Corp., a national engineering and architecture company based in Kansas City, Mo.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident.
Also Friday, a Washington-bound Acela train hit a woman crossing the tracks in Stonington, Conn., seriously injuring her arm and killing her dog, authorities said.
Amtrak police said the 69-year-old woman was walking her yellow Labrador when she heard a whistle and crossed the tracks, thinking she would avoid the train. She thought it was on a different track, the police said.
