Driver indicted in fatal crash

01:00 AM EST on Thursday, February 21, 2008

COVENTRY — A man accused of driving away after his all-terrain vehicle crashed last summer, fatally injuring a passenger, was indicted on two felony counts yesterday by a Kent County grand jury.

Gregory P. Hebert, 23, of 1540 Hill Farm Rd. was indicted on charges of driving to endanger and leaving the scene of the June 23 accident that resulted in the death, several days later, of Ashley Phelps, 21, also of Coventry.

According to the police, the two friends were at a block party that evening and Hebert was giving Phelps a ride on the ATV when it crashed into a stand of mailboxes and overturned. The woman was thrown to the pavement, and Hebert remounted the vehicle and sped off, the police said.

Phelps, who suffered head injuries, was taken first to Kent Hospital, in Warwick, and then to Rhode Island Hospital, in Providence, where she died in the trauma unit on July 2.

Hebert, accompanied by a lawyer, came to the police station the morning after the accident. He was initially charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing injury, a felony, and was released on his own recognizance.

He is scheduled to be arraigned March 7 in Superior Court, Warwick, on the grand jury charges.
