EAST GREENWICH — Last Wednesday’s deadline for filing declarations of candidacy came and went with neither major party having full slates for November’s Town Council and School Committee contests.

Still, the Board of Canvassers reported that both the Democratic and Republican state chairmen availed themselves of the election law that allows them to fill any vacancies on their slates within 24 hours of the declaration deadline.

By last Wednesday, four Republicans and one Democrat had declared for Town Council, where all five seats will be on the ballot. The Republicans included two incumbents, Michael B. Isaacs and Henry V. Boezi, and former school board member Steven W. Gregson and newcomer Richard P. Buonauito. The lone Democrat was incumbent Mark Schwager.

Appointed later by the Republican state leadership to fill out the GOP council slate was Michael S. Kiernan. The Democrats added no one.

Three School Committee seats are on the ballot this year, and none of the incumbents is seeking reelection. Declaring last week were Republicans Paul H. Martin, who lost his seat on the board in 2006, and James W. Patti. No Democrats filed declarations.

Later, according to the canvassers, the Republican leadership added a third GOP candidate, Robert Durante, and the Democrats appointed one candidate, Deidre Gifford.

The declared and appointed candidates have until July 11 to return signed nomination papers to the Board of Canvassers. Council and school board candidates must obtain the signatures of 50 voters.
