Rhode Island’s primary election
07:10 AM EDT on Monday, September 8, 2008
Tomorrow’s primary elections in Rhode Island are for Republicans and Democrats to choose their party’s nominees for federal, state and local offices.
WHO MAY VOTE: All who have been registered to vote in their current city or town for at least the past 30 days.
The largest slice of Rhode Island voters is made up of independents — unaffiliated voters — and they can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primaries tomorrow.
The state has 329,288 independent voters, 278,570 registered Democrats and 75,498 Republicans, according to the secretary of state’s office.
While the independents can choose either primary, registered Republicans are eligible to vote only in the GOP primary and registered Democrats can vote only in their party’s primary.
An independent who decides to vote in either primary may retain independent status by asking poll workers for a disaffiliation form and signing it on the way out of the polling place.
POLLING PLACES: Most of the more than 440 polling places open at 7 or 8 a.m., and all close at 9 p.m. Any voter who is inside a polling place by 9 p.m. is eligible to cast a ballot.
Local canvassing boards will be open tomorrow to help guide voters seeking information.
The secretary of state’s office will also provide voter information, at www.sec.state.ri.us/vic. Voters who do not know where they are supposed to vote can locate their polling place by logging in and providing their street address. The office can also be reached at (401) 222-2340.
The same Web site also contains sample ballots and opening times for all of Rhode Island’s 39 communities.
ELECTION RESULTS: The Journal’s Web site, projo.com, will provide continuous updates of election returns, news reports and reaction, starting shortly after the polls close at 9 p.m. Results will also be available at the state Board of Elections site, at www.elections.state.ri.us/
