PROVIDENCE — Red Sox or Patriots?

Get ready to pick your loyalties.

Just in time for baseball season, legislators are pushing forward with plans to offer both Red Sox and Patriots team license plates.

Rhode Island drivers could purchase the plates for a $40 surcharge, on top of the standard registration fee. Half the proceeds would go to the state and the remainder would go to charity, with the Red Sox tags benefiting The Jimmy Fund and the Patriots editions helping The New England Patriots Charitable Foundation’s youth efforts in this state.

The plates would be offered in bulk through the Division of Motor Vehicles, so you’d have to wait for 900 people to sign up before any could be ordered.

But supporters say that won’t be a problem. It took only a few hours for demand to exceed that number when Massachusetts began selling its versions. Since 2003, Red Sox license plates have raised more than $3.5 million, with close to 50,000 plates currently on the road. In less than two years, Patriots tags have raised more than $1 million.

“It has no cost to the state because we cover our costs, but at the same time we can do something to put a bright spot in children’s futures,” said Burrillville Rep. Edwin Pacheco, sponsor of the Patriots bill.

Design plans for the Rhode Island plates have not been finalized.

A House committee approved the bills last night, sending them to the full House for a vote. Legislation is also moving through the Senate.

Of course, if the bills pass and you’re a fan of both teams, you will have to make that choice.

Or buy another car.
