Federal grant to help pay for beach pavilion
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 21, 2007
A $500,000 federal grant and matching money from the state will pay for a new pavilion at Salty Brine State Beach, Sen. Jack Reed announced yesterday.
Construction is expected to start this fall, which means the new facility should be ready for next summer, said Reed spokesman Chip Unruh.
The federal money will come from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, while the state match will come from a bond voters approved in 2004 to protect water quality, renovate state parks and pay for other environmental projects.
The existing beach facility was built in 1972 and needs new doors and siding, as well as a new roof, said Gail Mastrati, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Management.
Reed said the grants will allow “future generations of beach-goers” to enjoy Salty Brine, which he called “a wonderful family beach that gets a lot of use from both tourists and Rhode Islanders.”
The beach is located in Galilee and was known as Galilee State Beach until 1990, when it was named for Salty Brine, the late radio personality.
