R.I. heritage panel to give 11 awards

PROVIDENCE — The state Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission will present 11 preservation awards as part of its annual Historic Preservation Conference Saturday at 9 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church.
The award winners are:
Volunteer service award: Deming Sherman, a Providence lawyer, for his pro-bono work on issues of historic preservation, smart growth and public spaces.
Professional leadership award: Cornelis de Boer, a Providence architect, for his expertise in restoring many of the state’s most significant historic properties and his dedication to the highest historic preservation standards.
Public service award: Grow Smart Rhode Island, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, for its advocacy of sustainable development with an emphasis on revitalizing historic properties and preserving open space.
Advocacy award: West Broadway Neighborhood Association for its 25 years of working to promote historic preservation, improve public infrastructure and enhance the quality of life on Providence’s west side.
Stewardship awards: The Champlin Foundations for its longstanding commitment to preserve the state’s historic places by supporting capital improvements, and the Newport Restoration Foundation for 40 years of preserving Newport’s 18th-century neighborhoods and interpreting Aquidneck Island’s historic places.
Project awards:
•Belvoir Properties for the restoration of Rosedale Apartments, in Cranston.
•Candace and David Keith for rescuing Indian Spring, a Newport mansion designed by Richard Morris Hunt.
•AS220 for rehabilitation of Providence’s Dreyfus Hotel.
•Church of the Assumption, in South Providence, for restoration of its building.
•Several mill building rehabilitation projects: Berkander Building and Monohasset Mill, both in Providence; Slatersville Mill, in North Smithfield, and Royal Mills, in West Warwick.
