Get fit: Shape Up RI, a statewide nonprofit exercise and weight-loss challenge, begins registration for its annual wellness competition on Jan. 2.
The campaign encourages Rhode Islanders to improve their health and lifestyle by increasing their physical activity levels and developing smart eating practices. Participants may register online and pay a $15 registration fee, which includes a digital pedometer. Teams, consisting of 5 to 11 people, make their own schedules and plans tailored to the needs of their members.
The competition begins Feb. 2; for information, call (401) 421-0608 or e-mail www.shape upri.org.
Employee awards: Awards of excellence have been presented to the following employees at Women & Infants’ Hospital: Barbara Gallagher of Coventry, the Mary Dowd Struck Award for Excellence in Nursing; Evelyn Pearcy of East Providence and Sharon Vasella of Johnston, the Richard P. Welch Award for Continued Excellence in Patient and Family Centered Care.
Holiday donations: For the 12th consecutive year, the Feinstein Foundation is offering to add $100,000 to donations made before the end of the year to local nonprofit agencies. If the total raised from this offer exceeds $100,000, as is expected, a maximum of $10,000 will go to any one participating agency.
To share in the Feinstein money, local agencies need to send a copy of their tax-exempt status with a typed cover letter bearing their full name and address, during the first week of January 2008. Send to: Alan Feinstein, 37 Alhambra Circle, Cranston RI, 20905.
The letters need to show the money or food raised in November and December. Food items should be valued at $1 per item pound. For more information, contact Ed Walton at (401) 467-5155.
