Warren girl injured when hit by SUV
01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, May 16, 2009
WARREN — A 14-year-old girl who chased a ball into the street and was struck by a car Tuesday night was at Hasbro Children’s Hospital Wednesday with an ankle injury, according to the police.
The Warren resident was near her home when she ran into the road at the intersection of Vernon and Howland streets around 6:52 p.m. Tuesday, Police Lt. Joseph Loiselle said. He refused to identify the girl, saying it’s department policy not to name juveniles injured in accidents.
The driver of the vehicle — Denise Moniz, 39, of 1 Lee Drive in Warren — was driving a 2003 Chevrolet SUV east on Vernon Street, toward Metacom Avenue, when she saw the girl run into the road chasing the ball, Loiselle said. She braked, but did not have enough time to react and ran over the girl’s left foot, Loiselle said.
The police have no indication that Moniz was speeding, and she is not charged in connection with the accident, Loiselle said.
