01:00 AM EST on Sunday, March 11, 2007
Six people with Bristol connections will be inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame today at Mount Hope Farm, in Bristol.
The inductees are Chief Massasoit, William Bradford, Rudolf Frederick Haffenreffer Jr., Rudolf Frederick Haffenreffer III, Carl W. Haffenreffer and John Brown Herreshoff.
They will join 535 other Rhode Islanders, from Roger Williams to present-day people, whose names have been entered into the hall of fame, which was created in 1965.
Many of the latest inductees are associated with Mount Hope Farm on Metacom Avenue.
Chief Massasoit (1581-1661) was a chief sachem of the Wampanoag nation who lived on the Mount Hope lands. He befriended the pilgrims at Plymouth and participated in the first Thanksgiving feast.
William Bradford (1729-1808) was a U.S. senator, speaker of the House of Representatives, a delegate to the Second Continental Congress and a lieutenant governor of Rhode Island. He owned Mount Hope Farm for a quarter-century until his death.
Rudolf Frederick Haffenreffer Jr. (1874-1954) was a businessman who purchased Mount Hope Farm for use as a summer retreat. His business ventures included the Narragansett Brewery and the construction and operation of the Mount Hope Bridge.
Frederick Haffenreffer III (1902-1991) was the eldest son of Rudolf Haffenreffer. He was president of the Herreshoff Mfg. Co., which his family purchased in 1930. He also managed the Mount Hope Bridge for a number of years.
Carl W. Haffenreffer (1906-1999) was the younger son of Rudolf Haffenreffer. He was general manager of the Herreshoff Mfg. Co. when two America’s Cup winners were built. He and his brother donated much of the Mount Hope lands to Brown University.
John Brown Herreshoff (1841-1915) was cofounder of the Herreshoff Mfg. Co. with his younger brother Nathaniel. He lost his sight as a teenager but was still a successful boatbuilder.
The ceremony is free and open to the public. It starts at 2 p.m.
