07:35 AM EST on Friday, January 2, 2009
LINCOLN –– The winning numbers for the Rhode Island Lottery’s first million-dollar raffle were announced as expected, at 11 sharp Wednesday night, but no one was there to claim the prize.
Hundreds were gathered at the Twin River casino’s Lighthouse Bar to hear the announcement and many chimed in as the wait for 11 p.m. trickled down to a final few seconds, chanting “five, four, three, two one.”
Then came the announcement. The numbers were: 1, 0, 5, 9, 9, 5.
When no one ran to the stage to claim the prize, people went back to their New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Launched on Oct. 6, the raffle was the first of its kind in Rhode Island. In all, 120,000 tickets were sold, giving players the best odds in New England to win $1 million. Each ticket cost $20.
There were also 10 $10,000 winners, 100 $500 winners and 500 $100 prizes, according to the lottery. The winning numbers are posted on the lottery’s Web site, www.rilot.com .
Winning ticket holders have 365 days to claim their prizes.
