Man in serious condition after being shot in Providence house

06:46 AM EDT on Tuesday, October 21, 2008

PROVIDENCE — An unidentified man was shot in the abdomen in a house at 39 Vandewater St. in the Wanskuck neighborhood yesterday afternoon, the police said.

The victim underwent surgery at Rhode Island Hospital and was reported to be in serious condition.

“We’re working the investigation,” said Maj. Paul Fitzgerald. “We do have some leads.”

The shooting occurred between 1 and 1:30 p.m. in a 2½-story apartment house that Maria DaLomba, who lives across the street at 36 Vandewater, said is a headache for neighbors. There is always commotion there, such as noisy parties, she said.

That was followed about four hours later with another reported shooting, at Elmwood and Lenox avenues in the Elmwood neighborhood. A city rescue truck was dispatched to that scene at 5:38 p.m. to pick up a 26-year-old male who was shot once in the chest, according to the Fire Department.

The identity and medical condition of that victim was not immediately known. He was conscious when he was brought to the hospital, the department said.

Those were the second and third incidents of gun violence in about 38 hours in the city, with the earliest occurrence having been a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting at Rugby and Nebraska streets in South Providence between 3 and 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the police.

The police said the victim in that incident was Rodney Castillo, 19, of 104 Indiana Ave., who was shot in the right thigh and treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Castillo was driving on Eddy Street with two passengers when he passed a gold sport utility vehicle, which then followed their 1990 BMW and pulled alongside, according to the passengers’ account. Four or five shots were fired from the SUV and Castillo was struck, the police were told.

Castillo sped away from the SUV but then surrendered the wheel to one of the passengers, who drove to the hospital.
