PROVIDENCE — A man who was charged recently with the gunpoint robbery of four people coming from a church meeting now faces additional charges in what a police lieutenant calls a reign of terror in the West End.

Paul Rezendes, 21, whom the police say lives with his mother at 22 Diamond St. in the West End, is accused of the knifepoint robbery of a bicyclist, forcibly stealing a handbag from a woman and possessing a credit card stolen from a social-services counselor in a mugging.

Chronologically, in the first additional incident that occurred on Sept. 8, Rezendes is charged with first-degree robbery. Wilder Sosa, 25, of 247 Union Ave., was riding a bicycle on Messer Street in the West End shortly before midnight when a man, identified as Rezendes, threatened him with a knife. The robber took his wallet, containing $90 and credit cards; his Guatemalan-issued passport; and a cell phone.

Wilder told the police that he began to ride off, but then swung back to check the license plate of a car the robber had entered on Marvin Street that was occupied by two other men. One of the occupants got out and displayed a handgun and another occupant yelled out, “Shoot him,” according to Wilder. He pedaled away quickly.

Rezendes is charged, too, with the first-degree robbery on Sept. 23 of Manuela Saban, 38, of 206 Hanover St., whose handbag was stolen. Saban said she was at the rear of 43 Hollis St., in the West End, when a man tore the handbag from her shoulder, causing her to fall to the ground and scrape her elbow. The handbag contained her passport and $375, she said.

On Oct. 28, three caseworkers from Family Service of Rhode Island were working in the vicinity of 126 Hanover St., in the West End, when a gunman demanded their valuables, according to Lt. Luis San Lucas, commander of police District 4.

The robber got away with two handbags, containing a GPS, wallets, credit cards, cell phones, car keys and client records, from caseworkers Natalia Velez, 25, of Pawtucket, and Amy Modracek, 33, of Rochester, Mass. Their colleague, Dorie Haile, 49, of Smithfield, did not have anything to steal.

The victims could not identify the robber, but the police said that they found one of the women’s shopping cards in his possession. He has been charged with receiving stolen goods.

San Lucas has sent a letter to the Police Department commendation board suggesting awards for four officers who, he said, doggedly pieced together the cases against Rezendes, which began with Rezendes’ alleged gunpoint robbery of four people on Oct. 29 on Dexter Street in the West End.

He commended Patrolmen Nicholas Froncillo and Jonathan Desmarais and Detectives Robert DeCarlo and Robert Melaragno.

“This is the epitome of great police work,” San Lucas wrote. “A violent criminal … who has been terrorizing helpless residents …” has been taken off the street by officers who know the dangerous people in a neighborhood. He said it could be “the apprehension of the year.”
