Two plead guilty to drug trafficking

01:00 AM EST on Sunday, November 22, 2009

PROVIDENCE — Two city residents caught receiving illicit shipments of drugs by mail have pleaded guilty to cocaine trafficking, U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha announced Friday.

Dimas Liranzo and Jeanette Hernandez-Javier, both 20, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess cocaine and possession of more than 500 grams of cocaine with intent to distribute, on Nov. 16 and Friday, respectively, before U.S. District Judge William E. Smith.

Both admitted that they had received packages of cocaine mailed from Puerto Rico — Liranzo a kilogram and Hernandez-Javier, two kilograms. Both packages apparently were from the same source, according to Neronha.

At the plea hearings, Assistant U.S. Attorney Gerard B. Sullivan said the government could prove that postal inspectors in San Juan, Puerto Rico, alerted inspectors in Providence in August to suspicious packages originating in San Juan and addressed to individuals in Providence.

Postal inspectors in Providence intercepted the packages and a state police narcotics dog signaled the presence of narcotics. A court-authorized search of the packages, according to Neronha, determined that one contained a kilo of cocaine and the other, two kilos.

Inspectors arranged for simultaneous delivery of the packages on Aug. 6, one to an address on Burnside Street, South Providence, and the other to an address on Carleton Street, Mount Pleasant, monitored by members of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force. Each of the accused signed for a separate package.

Both of the accused allegedly gave drug agents false names and the names of the addresses on the packages also were false, according to Neronha. Liranzo told agents that his cousin had promised him $1,000 to take the delivery. Hernandez-Javier initially denied knowing the contents of the package for which she had signed.

Both remain in custody pending sentencing.
