No arrests in double shooting at Providence party

07:53 AM EST on Tuesday, December 15, 2009

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –– The police on Monday were investigating several leads but had made no arrests after two teenage brothers were shot at a house on Public Street early Sunday where a woman was throwing a party for a 15-year-old.

A 15-year-old boy who was shot once in the abdomen was in critical but stable condition late Sunday afternoon, police Capt. James Desmarais said Monday. The police have not named the boy because he is a juvenile.

His 19-year-old brother –– Kennber Paulino, of 12 Bodell Ave. –– was shot in the leg and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Desmarais said. The two brothers, who have different last names, were attending the birthday party and were supposed to be there, Desmarais said.

According to the police, the shooting happened before 12:18 a.m. on Sunday at 658 Public St.

Homeowner Orquidea Nieves, 53, said she was throwing a birthday party for a friend, and a number of people she didn’t know came to the party. She heard two shots outside the residence but told the police she didn’t see anything.

On Monday, Desmarais said the party had gotten “very crowded,” which prompted the hosts to ask those who weren’t invited to leave. Outside the residence, an altercation broke out and Paulino was shot. On Sunday, the police said Paulino’s younger brother then chased the shooter toward the back of the house and was shot in the abdomen with a .38-caliber gun.

Paulino was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where a spokeswoman said Monday they have no patient listed by that name.
