Newport man killed in crash on airport road
A 42-year-old Newport man driving to the airport to pick up his girlfriend Tuesday night was killed after he lost control of his car on Airport Connector Road and was thrown from the vehicle, according to the state police.
Steven Barlow, of 40B Earl Ave., was headed to the airport around 11:41 p.m. when he lost control of his girlfriend’s 2000 Nissan Maxima, veered left, crossed both lanes and struck a Jersey barrier, according to the state police.
The car rolled over three times before coming to rest on its roof, according to Lt. Wilfred K. Hill. Barlow was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle, Hill said. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:07 a.m., Hill said.
The state police said that speed may have been a factor in the accident, Hill said.

PROVIDENCE
Police seek suspects in two robberies
A store owner in Washington Park fought hard with two armed robbers holding up his grocery store, while a clerk in a convenience store across town was slashed with a knife by a robber who then politely thanked her for handing him money in two robberies in Providence on Monday.
The police are searching for the suspects, and do not believe the robberies are connected, said Capt. James Desmarais.
Just before 3 p.m. Bras Frazao and his wife, Maria, were inside their Portuguese-American Market, at 896 Allens Ave., when two men dressed in black walked in and headed to the back of the store, according to a police report. One man wore a bandanna over his face, the police said; the other wore a ski mask and carried a handgun.
Frazao jumped over the front counter and went after them. He fought with the gunman, who hit him in the face with the butt of the gun, but the other robber got to the counter and grabbed some money, the police said.
Frazao struggled with them hard enough that the fleeing robbers dropped some of the money on the floor as they ran away, Desmarais said.
In the robbery at the Cumberland Farms, 414 Smithfield Ave., in the Charles neighborhood, the clerk told the police that a man came into the store at 9:30 p.m. and asked about buying some low-priced items, such as soda, but left without purchasing anything.
An hour later, the customer came back with a utility knife in his hand. He cut the clerk on her neck and demanded cash, the police said.
As she handed him about $73, the robber said, “Thank you,” and left, the police said.
The clerk declined medical treatment at the scene.

Man tells police he was shot by man in van
A Pawtucket man appeared at the police station and reported that two young men shot at him after summoning him to their van Tuesday around 10:45 p.m.
Biady Richmond, 27, of 95 Randall St., said he was on West Avenue when two young men in a white minivan called him over. When Richmond went to see what they wanted, one of them fired a single shot that grazed his hip, according to Maj. Arthur Martins.
Richmond was treated at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island.
Richmond told the police he did not know who the men were, Martins said.

Robber drops cash when dye pack explodes
The young man remained silent, Pawtucket police said, as he gave a teller at Webster Bank an envelope with a statement written on it: “Be calm and put the money in the envelope.”
But perhaps he had some choice words as he crossed the parking lot with the envelope stuffed with stolen cash when a dye pack that the teller had tucked inside exploded.
The robber ran off, but the police found the envelope and the ink-stained money drifting through the parking lot, said Detective Donti Rosciti.
The young man walked into the bank branch on 265 Newport Ave. just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, carrying the manila envelope in his gloveless hands, said Rosciti. His face was uncovered and captured on a surveillance camera.
Rosciti said the robber appeared to be about 18 years old and about 6 feet tall. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the Nike logo on the left side and dark-colored jeans.

Bicyclist hit by car and bus in serious shape
SWANSEA — A 15-year-old bicyclist who collided with a car and was hit by a bus Tuesday afternoon was listed in serious condition at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence Wednesday morning.
Justin Charron, of Somerset, a student at Diman Regional Vocational Technical School in Fall River, was traveling east on Hinsdale Avenue when he drove into the Bark Street intersection and collided with a southbound vehicle operated by Grace Santos of Swansea, according to the police.
Deputy Chief Robert Furtado said Justin was wearing in-ear headphones and carrying an iPod when he collided with the car.
Justin hit the car’s windshield and the hood of the car and fell into the street. He was then struck by a school bus traveling north, Furtado said. The school bus was driven by Patricia Grennon of Somerset, who was bringing children home from school, Furtado said. The bus ran over one of Justin’s legs, he said.
The accident is being investigated by Swansea police and the Massachusetts State Police.
