PROVIDENCE — Michael C. McDermott, of Warwick, has been named sports editor at The Providence Journal.
A six-year employee of The Journal, he has worked in a variety of roles within the newspaper’s sports and news departments, most recently serving as assistant sports editor/Web producer.
“Mike has the vision, energy and experience to move our sports report forward. He has shown an ability to achieve excellence in print and online, and in all aspects of sports coverage,” said Thomas E. Heslin, senior vice president and executive editor of The Providence Journal.
As assistant sports editor, McDermott worked closely with The Journal’s sports columnists and writers, planned coverage for the newspaper and its Web site, projo.com, and was instrumental in building the local high school sports Web pages for projo.com.
McDermott joined The Journal’s news department in 2003 as a copy editor and transitioned to metro section editor before moving to sports in 2007. Prior to joining The Journal, he was a town reporter, schools reporter and later copy editor at The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass., and did a stint as editor of an English-language newspaper in Baku, Azerbaijan.
McDermott graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science in journalism from Northeastern University in Boston.
