By the numbers: R.I. arrests for driving on suspended license

01:00 AM EST on Sunday, November 8, 2009

It’s difficult to track how many people are arrested for driving on suspended or otherwise inactive licenses — and even more difficult to learn how many multiple offenders are out there because the state Department of Motor Vehicles’ computer database is old and not easily searchable for such data. The state’s court records are also not easily searchable for such data.

As The Providence Journal sought to determine how many people were arrested last year for driving on suspended licenses, Johnston and Scituate police departments pored over their arrest records and tallied how many multiple offenders they had arrested.

Elsewhere around the state, a sampling of police departments tallied the total number of arrests they made. The Rhode Island State Police report 1,634 arrests; Providence, 1,111; South Kingstown, 160; and Warwick, 706. Some of those arrests are the same individual more than once.
